The Austrian Social Service defines itself through its many different projects all over the world. Within in the framework of the international development cooperation social servants are able to do their civilian service abroad for 12 months. The tasks depend on the circumstances of the deployment location and may vary in a number of ways.
Austrian Social Servants are e.g. active in the following areas:
- Educational Projects: Looking after pupils, providing learning aid, preparing and holding different lessons in school, preparing leisure activities as well as activities during break time and being responsible for other general administrative tasks. One example of our Educational Projects is the “Asosiación Solidaridad para la Educación y la Cultura – Casa Hogar” (ASOL), in Guatemala.
- Environmental Projects: The aim is to raise awareness for environmental problems by organizing events, creating flyers, coordinating mass clean-ups, establishing contacts and cooperation with local NGOs and fundraisers. One example of our Environmental Projects is the “Tibetan Settlement Office” in India.
- Medical Care Projects: Organizing courses for advanced training and education, helping at the infirmary as well as being responsible for other general administrative tasks. One example of our Medical Care Projects is the “Albert Schweizer Hospital” in Gabun. This project requires the appropriate specialized knowledge.
Of course a clear distinction cannot be made between the Locations for Austrian Social Service at their respective place of work. Many of our projects combine a variety of different tasks and areas of work. The focus of the Austrian Social Service lies heavily, with a few exceptions, on emerging countries in Central- and South America, Africa and Asia. Over a hundred Austrian Social Servants did their Austrian Service Abroad in a foreign country through our organization since October 1998.
